Police warn Ga. drivers against idling empty cars

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- As colder weather approaches, police in coastal Georgia are warning drivers against leaving their cars unattended with the keys inside while their vehicle warms up.<br /> <br /> Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Capt. DeVonn Adams said in a statement that each year as the weather gets colder, auto thefts increase because drivers begin leaving cars idling with heaters on to warm them up.<br /> <br /> Police say drivers who are commonly targeted by car thieves are parents who are preparing to take children to school but leave the car running with the keys inside.<br /> <br /> Police Chief Julie Tolbert says authorities understand that leaving cars idling is a matter of convenience for many drivers. But police warn drivers that it could take only seconds for a thief to take advantage of the opportunity.
