Weekend fire ruled arson

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
WINDER - A weekend fire in Barrow County was deliberately set, according to investigators.

Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for Barrow County Emergency Services, says the call came in Saturday morning about 5:00 and that the caller reported "heavy smoke" in the City Pond Road area.

"Firefighters were dispatched to the area to determine the cause of the smoke," Dakin said, adding "...they found heavy fire conditions in an outbuilding in the 800 block of City Pond Road."

The structure had already collapsed due to fire damage and the flames had spread from the building to a travel trailer and a pickup as well as a second outbuilding. Due to the amount of fire and collapse of the buildings, firefighters fought the fire from a defensive position, he added. Both buildings and the two vehicles were heavily damaged by the fire.

The cause of the fire was determined to be "an intentional human act," according to Lt. Dakin.
