Safe Kids, Army Corps of Engineers hosts water safety program

GAINESVILLE - Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County is teaming up with the US Army Corps of Engineers to provide complimentary boat checks tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Old Federal Day Use Park on Lake Lanier.

The vessel check is courtesy and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will check for the proper safety equipment, according to Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County Coalition Coordinator Kim Martin.

"They'll check navigation lights, make sure that they are all working; ventilation of the motor and make sure there is not a carbon monoxide issue; make sure they have a fire extinguisher, distress signals, life jackets for each person on the boat and a throw-able device - either a ring or a seat cushion," said Martin.

Vessels that pass will receive a sticker to affix to their boats. Vessels that do not pass will not be issued citations but instead given a report on how to correct issues. Safe Kids will also be giving out promotional items, including coloring books and "Kids Don't Float" flying discs.
