The vessel check is courtesy and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will check for the proper safety equipment, according to Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County Coalition Coordinator Kim Martin.
"They'll check navigation lights, make sure that they are all working; ventilation of the motor and make sure there is not a carbon monoxide issue; make sure they have a fire extinguisher, distress signals, life jackets for each person on the boat and a throw-able device - either a ring or a seat cushion," said Martin.
Vessels that pass will receive a sticker to affix to their boats. Vessels that do not pass will not be issued citations but instead given a report on how to correct issues. Safe Kids will also be giving out promotional items, including coloring books and "Kids Don't Float" flying discs.
