EOCT results: many students subpar in math, improving elsewhere

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) Georgia students earned higher scores on many end-of-course exams this year than in 2012, but more than 60 percent failed to meet state standards in algebra.

About 63 percent of students who took the algebra test this spring failed to meet state standards, according to results the Georgia Department of Education released Wednesday.

Students failed to meet Algebra standards in 10 of 15 districts in metro Atlanta. Some districts saw failure rates of nearly 78 percent.

Gov. Nathan Deal says the scores are unacceptable and show more accurately how many students are ready for college or to enter the workforce after graduating high school.

Department of Education Chief Academic Officer Mike Buck says the agency is trying to offer teachers more math instruction training.
