Girls basketball: Providence nips Lakeview at buzzer

GAINESVILLE -- After a flurry of turnovers in the final 20 seconds, Providence Christian's Aubrey Gold scored on a layup with three seconds left to give the Storm a 33-31 win over Lakeview Academy Tuesday in Region 8-A girls action.

Lakeview Academy (9-11, 3-3 Region 8A-A) had led most of the game and took a 31-29 lead on a Kaylee McClendon basket with 3:25 left in the game. But the Lady Lions would not score again as Providence forced four Lakeview turnovers in the final 90 seconds.

The Lady Storm (11-6, 4-1 Region 8B-A) tied the game on another basket by Gold, who scored all five of her points in the second half, with 1:01 left.

Lakeview looked to have a chance to grab the lead getting a steal with 16 seconds left. But the Lady Lions turned the ball over four seconds later and Providence, after a time out, executed a perfect inbounds pass to win the game.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than four points with six lead changes and five ties. Lakeview's Handte brock a 7-all tie with a free throw with a minute left in the first quarter for an 8-7 Lady Lions lead. They pushed it 10-7 early in the second quarter.

But the Lady Storm reclaimed the lead with a 6-0 run for a 13-10 lead. But the Lady Lions answered with a 7-0 run to take a 17-13 lead, capped four straight points from Schyler Miller.

Providence would get a 3-pointer from Megan Parker for a 18-17 lead late in the second quarter but Lakeview's Daniele Morgan gave the Lady Lions a 20-18 halftime with a basket at the buzzer.

Jessie Kowalewicz paced Providence with 10 points. Gold finished with five points, six rebounds, and five blocks for the Lady Storm.

Lakeview Academy, which has now lost four straight, was led by five points each from Taylor Handte and McClendon.
