Hall 'Habitat High' completes 9th house

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Hall County School System's "Habitat High" has completed its ninth house for Habitat for Humanity.

The house is located at 3156 Ridgemont Dr. off of Old Flowery Branch Road. Construction took about four months and is now home to Heather Walls and her three children.

Habitat High Instructor Rodney Presley said seven students worked on the house. Presley said Habitat High has "grown moderately" since its inception four years ago. The number each year varies from around 15 the first year, to as many as 25 and the seven who participated this year. Twenty-three students have been accepted into the program for the next school year and each Hall County high school has been represented throughout the years.

"We do try to keep it limited so the students can gain as much individual instruction as possible, and the less amount of students allows them to do more components of the build," Presley added.

The students work on at least two houses each school year.

How much and what kind of work the students do varies.

"It depends on the house (crawl space height, slab, numbers of decks, etc.), the scope of the work, and the licensed contractor that will allow us to help with their installation," Presley said. "The students have taken part in footing digging/pouring, block the foundation, framing, siding, roofing, decks, insulation, sheetrock, set cabinets, trim, paint, landscaping, pulling wires for electrical at some point on different houses. For example, this lot already had a slab. So all we had to do is cut the concrete to reroute the plumbing, pour the concrete back, and start the framing from there."
