GAINESVILLE -- After allowing 20 points in the first quarter, the Gainesville defense finally took control against Monroe Area Friday night.
The Red Elephants allowed just 24 points combined over the second and third quarters while rallying for a 81-59 win in a key Region 8B-AAA game.
Gainesville trailed 20-17 after the opening period but used a 24-12 second quarter to take a 41-32 halftime lead. They increased the lead to 58-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Shaquan Cantrell had a big game for Gainesville (13-7, 7-1 Region 8B-AAA) with 22 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Lance White added 12 points and five 5 assists and Deshaun Watson and Chase England had 11 points each for the Elephants.
Ken Jackson led Monroe Area (12-6, 4-4) with 37 points.
Gainesville next will travel to Class AAA No. 6 Walnut Grove (16-3, 7-1) on Tuesday in a battle for first place.
