Petition calls for ouster of immigration critic from new state board

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - A petition containing some 5,000 signatures has been delivered to Gov. Nathan Deal calling for him to rescind the appointment of a vocal critic of illegal immigration to a new state board charged with enforcing compliance with immigration-related state laws.

Opponents of Phil Kent held a news conference at the state Capitol Tuesday protesting his appointment to Georgia's new Immigration Enforcement Review Board. The panel is set to hold its first meeting Thursday.

Steve Golden, who led the petition drive, said Kent's ``extreme views on race and culture have no place in the state of Georgia.''

A spokesman for Deal had no comment.

Kent serves as national spokesman for Americans for Immigration Control, which calls for deporting all illegal immigrants and opposes any amnesty or guest worker legislation.
