SMYRNA - The Georgia Food Industry Association (GFIA) says 100 cities and counties throughout Georgia are now set to hold Sunday alcohol sales referendums during the November 8 general election.
The GFIA says these areas represent approximately 2.5 million Georgians living in all parts of the state. But a map accompanying the report shows that the vast majority are concentrated in north Georgia. Other cities and counties are still weighing whether to schedule referendums and still others have opted not have a vote until sometime next year. (The link below will take you to a list of those the GFIA says have scheduled referendums on Nov. 8.)
"We would like to commend the city and county leaders throughout the state who have decided to give the people the right to choose what is best for their communities," said GFIA President Kathy Kuzava. "This effort has always been about our industry's desire to serve our customers. If the referendums are successful our customers are ones who will benefit."
In April, Governor Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 10 which allows cities and counties to vote on Sunday retail alcohol sales.
According to the GFIA, votes are scheduled in November in Auburn, Barrow County, Braselton, Dawsonville, Elbert County, and Elberton. Also, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Hoschton, Jefferson, Oakwood, Pendergrass, Sugar Hill, Suwanee, and Winder.
