Storms flood streets, zap power in metro Atlanta; some problems reported in Gainesville area

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Thunderstorms that rolled across parts of Georgia including metro Atlanta early Friday led to some traffic accidents, street flooding and power outages, and caused some problems in the Gainesville area.

A stretch of Spring Street in downtown Atlanta was flooded for a time early Friday after heavy rains.

Georgia Power crews were working to clear a large tree that fell on power lines early Friday morning, leaving around 1,000 Sandy Springs customers in the dark.

Statewide, authorities said about 2,800 customers were without power including about 1,800 in metro Atlanta.

GAINESVILLE-HALL COUNTY

The Hall County Sheriff's Office and Gainesville Police Department report that a couple of trees came down during the storms, one on Circle Drive in Gainesville about 11:00 Thursday night and the other on Wade Whelchel Road in North Hall early Friday morning.

Two weather-related traffic accidents were reported, one on Gaines Mill Road and one on Georgia Highway 52 at Old Cornelia Highway. Sheriff's deputies say there were no injuries in either crash.
