G-Braves fall five back in IL South standings

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The G-Braves lost to the Syracuse Chiefs in their final regular season game against an IL North foe on Friday in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Gwinnett Braves (69-58) are now 5 games behind the Durham Bulls (73-52) in the IL South standings, but remain 2.5 games behind the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (72-56) in the Wild Card standings.

In the bottom of the second inning 2B Steve Lombardozzi hit a sac fly to LF, which allowed SS Seth Bynum to score making it a 3-1 game at the time. That was the run that would push the Chiefs over the top.

Yohan Flande started the game for the Braves and earned his 8th loss of the season. Flande went 4.1 IP allowing 4 R, 2 ER on 11 H with 3 K's. RHP Anthony Varvaro relieved Flande in the 5th and went 1.2 IP allowing 2 H with 3 K's. LHP Ben Swaggerty finished the game for Gwinnett, tossing 2.0 IP allowing 1 R/ER, on a H with a BB and a K.

The G-Braves scored only 10 runs in the entire series against the Chiefs, with the team scoring two runs on Friday night. After the team only had two hits last night, the G-Braves had an impressive 11 hits on the night. CF Wilkin Ramirez led the offense for the Braves on the night. Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a 2B and a SB. SS Brandon Hicks also had a solid night, finishing 2-for-4 with a R and a 2B.

The Gwinnett Braves head back south to take on the Charlotte Knights in Charlotte, in the opening game of a four game home and home series against the IL South foe. RHP Erik Cordier (4-8, 5.28) takes the hill for the G-Braves vs. RHP Deunte Heath (2-7, 4.76) for the Knights, with game time set for 7:15PM.
