Softball: Buford falls in season opener, 2-1

By staff
KENNESAW -- In a season opening contest for both teams defending Class A champ Gordon Lee edged out defending Class AA champ Buford 2-1 on Monday in Kennesaw.

As many expected, the game featured a pitcher's duel, with Gordon Lee's Brenna Nation matching up against Buford's two freshman hurlers, starter Bria Bush and then Tessa Daniels.

Gordon Lee pulled ahead in the first inning with two singles and a passed ball, but Buford stater Bush settled in and did not allow another hit until the fourth inning -- though that batter eventually came around to score on a fielding error.

Meanwhile, Gordon Lee's Nation went the distance for the Trojans en route to a 10 strikeout performance for the night.

Buford halved the deficit in the bottom of the seventh, as Kodi Ricketson led off with a double and later scored when freshman Jordan Deep singled up the middle. But Nation struck out the next Lady Wolves batter and ended the game with a ground out.

None of Gordon Lee's runs were earned.

Bush suffered the loss, working four innings while allowing just three hits, one walk and striking out one.

Ricketson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2, while Deep supplied one RBI.

Buford will be on the road again Tuesday, travelling to North Georgia College and State University to play Class AAAA Madison County at 5:55 p.m.
