FORT MILL, S.C. -- Following a rain delay of two hours and 37 minutes prior to first pitch, the Charlotte Knight beat the Gwinnett Braves 7-5 late Friday/early Saturday at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, S.C.
The loss was the second in a row for Gwinnett (61-51) and kept the G-Braves a game-and-a-half back of the Durham Bulls in the IL South pennant race.
The Knights sealed the win in the bottom of the third when they sent 10 men to the plate versus G-Braves starter Erik Cordier. The Knights scored five in that half inning and never trailed.
Cordier (3-8) took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits, 5 walks, 6 strikeouts. Reliever Steven Shell replaced Cordier with two outs in the fourth, while Jay Chapman closed the game.
Stefan Gartrell was 1-for-4 with a two run home run, his 24th, to lead Gwinnett at the plate. Wil Nieves and Tyler Pastornicky each had two hits. Pastornicky upped his hitting streak to 10 games.
The Gwinnett Braves and Charlotte Knights continue their four game-home and home series Saturday night at Coolray Field. First pitch at 7:05 p.m. RHP Randall Delgado (NR) will make his first Triple-A start for Gwinnett. LHP Doug Davis (1-1, 1.50) takes the mound for the Knights. The game can be heard on the home of the G-Braves, WDUN 550 AM/102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone and Judd Hickinbotham calling the play by play. Air time set for 6:35 p.m.
