DURHAM, N.C. -- Five G-Braves pitchers combined to shut out the Durham Bulls on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
The G-Braves (58-47) allowed just six hits in the 2-0 win, pulling within a game of Durham (59-46) and the International League South lead in the process.
Neither team could put much offense together on Thursday, though Gwinnett designated hitter Mauro Gomez came through in the eighth inning, smacking his first triple of the season to score Stefan Gartrell and grab a 1-0 lead for the visitors.
With the way Gwinnett was pitching, the solitary run was plenty.
Todd Redmond started for the G-Braves but did not receive the decision, tossing 6 innings while allowing just 3 hits with 5 strikeouts. Arodys Vizcaino (1-0) ended up earning his first Triple-A win, coming on in the seventh and tossing 1 inning while allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. Gwinnett pitchers Dustin Richardson, Juan Abreu and Jairo Asencio all provided shut out relief the rest of the way -- with Asencio earning his 19th save of the season along the way, striking out all three batters he faced.
Brandon Hicks and Taylor Pastornicky paced Gwinnett at the plate on Thursday. Pastornicky finished the game going 2-for-4, while Hicks went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles.
The G-Braves finish their four-game series against the Durham Bulls on Friday night in Durham, N.C. The G-Braves will send out Yohan Flande (6-5, 3.90) to take on Andy Sonnanstine (1-1, 3.18) for the Bulls.
