DEMOREST - The City of Demorest has been awarded nearly $7 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for upgrades to its wastewater treatment plant and system.
Demorest's consulting engineer, Ben Turnipseed, detailed the award at the city's council meeting Tuesday evening.
"You earned a $3.98 million grant and a $3.0 million loan. This project will convert the present wastewater treatment plant from its 400,000 gallons per day capacity to approximately 800,000 gallons per day. There will be additional improvements, such as a pump station replacement and a new lab for testing."
The loan has a 2.875% interest rate repayable over 40 years as secured by a Water and Sewer System Revenue Bond as prior federal grants have been.
"This is great news for Demorest," said Mayor Malcolm Hunnicutt, "our system serves us and so many homes and businesses in Habersham County well. It is a central part of our infrastructure and customers rely on us to expand the system to meet the needs of our city and others for the decades ahead."
