BUFORD -- As if Jake Bunette's 2011 wasn't already the stuff of dreams, the recent Buford High graduate added another memorable chapter to an already stellar year on Tuesday when he learned he was the seventh-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League Baseball draft.
"I had been playing a doubleheader all day (in the East Cobb league), so I didn't even know it had happened until later this afternoon," said Bunette, who was taken with the first pick in the seventh round, No. 212 overall. "It's pretty crazy, kind of a weird feeling."
Burnette, who has already signed to play baseball for Georgia Tech, just finished an impressive season with the Wolves, helping Buford to its first state championship since 1977. The senior ended the 2011 campaign with an 8-0 record and a 1.72 Earned Run Average. He also starred for the Buford boys basketball team, which reached the Class AA championship game this past season.
"It's been one of those type of years you dream about," said Burnette, who says he isn't certain whether he will sign with the Pirates or head to Atlanta to play for the Yellow Jackets.
"I don't know what I'm going to do yet; the Pirates haven't made me a contract offer, so I'm just going to wait and see," Burnette said. "Even if I don't sign, Georgia Tech's definitely a strong back-up plan."
