ATLANTA - An administrative law judge has ruled that a permit allowing Forsyth County to discharge 6 million gallons a day of treated waste water into the Chattahoochee River is illegal.
Administrative Law Judge Kristin Miller said the discharge would violate state and federal laws because it would result in lower water quality. The Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper filed suit last year to overturn the permit issued by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
The judge said the county could treat its waste water more thoroughly.
Tim Perkins, Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department director, says it would cost an additional $121,000 a year to clean the volume of water it now discharges to a higher purity level.
Riverkeeper executive director Sally Bethea calls the ruling a major victory for clean water.
