G-Braves go cold on offense, fall 8-0 to IronPigs

By staff reports
LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett Braves couldn't follow last night's big win with another on Wednesday, dropping an 8-0 contest to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.

While Gwinnett's offense sputtered, the opposition jumped out to an early lead to secure the win. The G-Braves (26-26) remained in second place in the International League South division, dropping to 3.5 games behind Durham with the loss (figure at press time). The IronPigs (32-20) remained in first place in the IL North.

Offensively, the G-Braves got a leadoff double from center fielder Jeff Fiorentino, and that was about it. The IronPigs strung together a 3-0 lead after the third inning on walks, timely hitting and an error, and Gwinnett mustered only three base runners all game.

Gwinnett starter Yohan Flande (2-2) went 4 innings, yielding 3 runs on 6 hits with a pair of walks and 5 strikeouts in the loss.

At the plate, Fiorentino's leadoff double was the highlight of the offense for the G-Braves, who struck out a season high 14 times as a team.

The G-Braves play the final game of the first series in the current eight game homestand, going against Lehigh Valley in game four of their series on Thursday night at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will throw RHP Erik Cordier (0-0, 0.00) against Lehigh Valley LHP Ryan Feierabend (3-2, 6.04). The game can be heard on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM, and seen on TV on CSS.
