LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett Braves couldn't spin the Memorial Day festivities into a win in a homestand opener on Monday, dropping a 12-2 contest to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.
Gwinnett fell to .500 for the first time since April 12th, just six games into the season at 3-3. The G-Braves (25-25) remained in second place in the International League South division, dropping to 3.0 games behind Durham with the loss. The IronPigs (31-19) remained in first place in the IL North.
G-Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran couldn't take control on Monday, as he allowed the first four batters on the second inning to reach base. They turned into three runs, and Gwinnett never recovered. Teheran (4-1) went 6 innings, yielding 5 runs -- the most he's given up as a G-Brave and the highest total since July 28, 2010, with the Mississippi Braves (AA). He also allowed 9 hits, including his first homer of the year, while striking out 3 and walking 2 batters.
First baseman Mauro Gomez went 1-for-4 with his team-leading 10th home run of the season and 36th RBI to pace Gwinnett at the plate. Right fielder Stefan Gartrell was 2-for-4 with an RBI -- his eighth RBI in as many games.
The G-Braves play game two of the current eight game homestand, the second of a four game series against Lehigh Valley on Tuesday night at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will throw LHP Jose Lugo (1-0, 2.25) against Lehigh Valley RHP Brian Gordon (3-2, 4.88). The game can be heard on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
-- NOTES: Tonight's Memorial Day "Jersey's off our Back" auction of the team's camouflage commemorative tops raised $6,200, which the G-Braves will donate to local military families in need. ...
