PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox in 15 innings by a score of 4-2 on Thursday afternoon at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.
G-Braves starter Julio Teheran was outstanding, pitching 7 2/3 innings and matched his season high strikeout mark with seven. With the win, the Gwinnett Braves (19-14) remain in second place in the International League South division.
In the top of the 15th inning, almost 5 hours into the game, G-Braves outfielder Stefan Gartrell broke the marathon outing with a two-run home run for a 4-2 lead.
The extra innings offset an electric performance from Teheran. He finished the day allowing 3 hits, 2 runs and 4 walks on 120 pitches, 77 of which were for strikes. Reliever Anthony Varvaro came on and threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing 2 hits, a walk and striking out 4. Juan Abreu was next on the cue for the Braves and threw 2 innings with a walk and a strikeout. Jairo Asecnio (1-1) followed Abreu and earned his first win of the year, pitching 2 scoreless innings while allowing 4 hits with a walk. Scott Proctor recorded his third save of the year tossing a perfect 15th with a strikeout.
Wilkin Ramirez provided the early offense for the G-Braves on Thursday. Ramirez hit a solo home run, his sixth of the year, in the fifth inning off of starter Andrew Miller. He finished 1-for-5 with an RBI and 2 walks. Matt Young was the only G-Brave to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with 2 walks.
The Gwinnett Braves return home for the start of a four-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens. The G-Braves will send out RHP Todd Redmond (1-3, 3.21) vs. LHP Duane Below (3-1, 2.97) for the Mud Hens. The game can be heard on the home of the G-Braves, WDUN 550 AM/102.9 FM.
