ATLANTA - A proposal that would allow cities and counties in Georgia to legalize package alcohol sales on Sundays is headed to a Senate committee this afternoon.
Georgia is one of only three states in the nation that still forbids stores from selling alcohol on the Sabbath. Former Gov. Sonny Perdue opposed Sunday sales and vowed to veto any law passed in the Legislature approving the measure.
The Senate bill being discussed on Wednesday would let voters decide in local referendums whether they want Sunday alcohol sales between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. The decision would be left to individual cities and counties. Republican Gov. Nathan Deal has said he supports a local approach.
The Senate State and Local Government Operations Committee will consider the bill at 1:00 today.
