Week 9 previews: Region, subregion crowns up for grabs

Some region and subregion titles will be decided tonight, while plenty of other area teams are battling for a shot at those crowns.

Read on to see what week 9 has in store for your team...

REGION 8-AAAA
LOGANVILLE at FLOWERY BRANCH

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Falcon Field, Flowery Branch
-- LOGANVILLE (4-3, 4-3 Region 8-AAAA): Defeated Winder-Barrow 42-7 last week.
-- FLOWERY BRANCH (7-0, 7-0 Region 8-AAAA): Defeated Heritage (Conyers) 21-13 last week. The Falcons are ranked No. 3 in Class AAAA.
-- LAST MEETING: Flowery Branch won 42-21 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Falcons lead the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: Flowery Branch proved it can win the close games too last week, fending off Heritage (Conyers) late, and the Falcons will look to continue their perfect record tonight against an improving Loganville team. Flowery Branch coach Lee Shaw says his team must avoid a letdown after last week's emotionally- and physically-testing victory. ... Loganville has won two straight to put itself in playoff contention. The Red Devils feature a multiple-I offense and a 4-3 defense. Loganville's attack is paced by running backs Braxton Beck and Bernard Merriweather and quarterback Garrett Ford and is averaging 29.1 points per game. Defensively, the Red Devils are allowing 24.1 points per game. Loganville has already dropped games to Region 8-AAAA's other frontrunners in Heritage and Clarke Central. ... Flowery Branch's spread offense will be eager to get back in its groove after some stumbles last week. The Falcons shot themselves in the foot on occasion but are still averaging 48.4 points per game. Leading the way is quarterback Kanler Coker (1,590 yards passing, 309 yards rushing, 32 total touchdowns), running back Jeremy Haley (791 yards rushing, 15 TDs) and a talented group of receivers, including Casey Osborne (26 catches, 478 yards, 6 TDs) and C.J. Curry (29 catches, 571 yards, 7 TDs). ... The Falcons defense received an emotional boost last week, stonewalling Heritage at fourth-and-goal at the Falcons 4-yard line to seal the win. Linebackers Jacob Allen, Sydney Cheeks and Quinncy Hodges join with defensive tackle Jonathan Frick and safety Jeremy James to lead a unit allowing just 12.1 points per game.

HERITAGE (CONYERS) at HABERSHAM CENTRAL

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Raider Stadium, Mt. Airy
-- RADIO: 99.3 FM
-- HERITAGE (7-1, 7-1 Region 8-AAAA): Lost 21-13 to Flowery Branch last week.
-- HABERSHAM (4-3, 4-3 Region 8-AAAA): Lost 56-31 to Flowery Branch on Oct. 7
-- LAST MEETING: Heritage won 10-13 in overtime on Oct. 22, 2010. Habersham leads the series 10-4.
-- NOTABLE: Habersham is coming off a bye and has a huge opportunity to solidify its place in the playoff race with a win tonight. It won't come easy against a Heritage team just on the outside of the Class AAAA top 10 and featuring one of the best defenses in the region. ... The Raiders bring one of the most explosive offenses in 8-AAAA to the contest, as quarterback Kevin Ellison paces an option attack that averages 37.3 points per game. A senior, Ellison has 1,333 yards and 22 touchdowns on 135 carries (9.9 yards per carry). He is also 37-of-85 passing for 625 yards and seven touchdowns. (He also has a punt return for a touchdown). He is aided by a strong offensive line, fullback Patrick Burns and leading receiver Zac Franks. ... Heritage's defense enters allowing just 12.4 points per game and held region leader Flowery Branch to a season-low 21 points last week. ... The Patriots offense will look to keep the ball on the ground, alternating between running backs Quami Stanley and Dominic Craft. Their wing-T assault is averaging 27.9 points per game. ... Habersham's scoring defense has been its biggest issue this season, allowing 34.1 points per game. Yet the Raiders are undefeated at home so far this season, edging out Apalachee and Salem in shootouts and showing they can make enough big plays to overcome any deficiencies. ... The playoff race in 8-AAAA is shaping up to come down to the wire, as Habersham, Loganville, Salem and Cedar Shoals are all currently within striking distance of the region's fourth and final playoff spot.

CEDAR SHOALS at APALACHEE

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: R Harold Harrison Stadium, Bethlehem
-- CEDAR SHOALS (3-4, 3-4 Region 8-AAAA): Defeated Salem 36-10 last week.
-- APALACHEE (2-5, 2-5 Region 8-AAAA): Lost 37-28 to Clarke Central last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Cedar Shoals won 28-21 on Oct. 22, 2010. Apalachee leads the series 2-1.
-- NOTABLE: Last week's tough-luck loss in Athens stunted a strong turnaround effort from Apalachee and made it almost impossible for the Wildcats to reach the postseason. But there is still plenty to play for in tonight's game, especially for a young team looking to solidify itself for the future. ... Of Apalachee's top offensive playmakers -- running backs Stanley Williams (637 yards, 9 TDs), Eric Tanner (405 yards, 4 TDs) and Zay Henry (489 yards, 3 TDs), and quarterback Clint Ashe (608 yards passing, 4 TDs) -- none are seniors. And the Wildcats offense is still averaging 26.6 points per game. ... Cedar Shoals is still hoping for a shot at the postseason and is paced by running back Rodney Willingham and quarterback Darius Jordan. The Jaguars come in averaging 24.4 points per game but are allowing 31.7 points per game on defense. Cedar Shoals' victory last week halted a three-game losing skid. ... Apalachee's defense is allowing 25.1 points per game.

WINDER-BARROW at SALEM
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Conyers
-- RADIO: 1300 AM
-- WINDER (0-7, 0-7 Region 8-AAAA): Lost 42-7 to Loganville last week.
-- SALEM (4-4, 4-4 Region 8-AAAA): Lost 36-10 to Cedar Shoals last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Salem won 16-6 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Seminoles lead the series 4-1.
-- NOTABLE: Winder is still looking for a way to halt its losing streak, which now stands at 21 games, while Salem is still looking to keep pace in the postseason race in 8-AAAA. The Seminoles must win to stay within striking distance, though Salem has dropped two straight contests. ... Winder Barrow's wing-T offense, led by running back Jamonte Riden, enters scoring just 10.3 points per game. The Bulldoggs defense has also struggled this season, allowing 40.6 per contest. ... Salem comes in scoring 24.4 points per game on offense, though standout running back Jahaad Coleman has missed playing time recently through injury. Defensively, the Seminoles are allowing 26.3 points per game.

REGION 8-AAA
GAINESVILLE at WALNUT GROVE

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Warriors Stadium, Walnut Grove
-- RADIO: 1240 AM
-- GAINESVILLE (6-1, 3-0 Region 8B-AAA): Defeated Monroe Area 41-21 last week. The Red Elephants are ranked No. 10 in Class AAA.
-- WALNUT GROVE (2-5, 1-2 Region 8B-AAA): Defeated Johnson 29-14 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Gainesville won 55-6 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Red Elephants lead the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: Gainesville is looking to win its seventh straight game and solidify its spot atop Region 8B-AAA against a Walnut Grove team that won its first road game in program history last week. ... The Red Elephants showed they can overcome a slow start and some self-imposed issues (Gainesville allowed a fake punt pass and fumbled away a kickoff return, both of which led to Monroe Area touchdowns) against athletic teams last week, pulling away from a 21-21 halftime score to knock out Monroe. Red Elephants coach Bruce Miller says the win showed his team it can't take anyone lightly and he will be preaching that fact this weekend against Walnut Grove. ... The Warriors feature plenty of athletes on offense, including quarterback Jonah Guinn and running back Durunta Momon. Basing out of a wing-T, Walnut Grove will throw a number of looks and sets at the Gainesville defense. The Warriors come in averaging 16.6 points per game and giving up 24.6 per contest. ... Gainesville's spread attack is averaging 48.5 points through six victories and continues to show it can make plays through a number of sources. Sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson leads the way with 1,677 yards passing, 488 yards rushing and 27 total touchdowns. He has a talented corps of receivers, including Stephen Mason (32 catches, 547 yards, 5 TDs), Justin Cantrell (31 catches, 473 yards, 7 TDs), Keyontra Harrison (13 catches, 285 yards, 5 TDs) and Lahius Leverette (18 catches, 263 yards, 4 TDs). Rayshon Thomas (252 yards, 6 TDs) has also begun to take over leadership of the running back position. ... The Gainesville defense has also played well during its six wins, giving up 9.8 points per game.

FRANKLIN COUNTY at NORTH HALL

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: The Brickyard, Gainesville
-- RADIO: 102.9 FM
-- FRANKLIN (3-4, 2-1 Region 8A-AAA): Defeated Chestatee 41-7 last week.
-- NORTH HALL (4-3, 3-0 Region 8A-AAA): Defeated Lumpkin County 49-0 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: North Hall won 20-14 on Oct. 22, 2010. Franklin County leads the series 7-4.
-- NOTABLE: Both North Hall and Franklin County enter tonight's game on the upswing -- the Trojans tied for first in 8A-AAA with a four-game win streak, and the Lions just a game behind after two straight victories. ... The Trojans are more than picking up steam after going above .500 for the first time this season last week. North Hall offense is rolling during the win streak, scoring 43.25 points per contest, while its defense is giving up just 8.75 points in its victories -- a far cry from the 43.6 per game allowed in three losses. The Trojans are averaging over 350 yards on offense so far and seem to have found their groove in the wing-T attack, as their 308.9 yards per game on the ground shows. Imani Cross (1,245 yards, 17 TDs) leads the way, with fullbacks Caleb Faulkner (439 yards, 8 TDs) and Zac Little (234 yards, 1 TD) providing plenty of quality depth. ... Defensively, the Trojans are also led by Cross' 47 tackles (he also starts at linebacker), while safety Andrew Smith has 42 stops. Wade Phillips also has 32 tackles and is becoming a big-play threat, both with interceptions and on kick returns. ... Franklin County's option attack has rolled up yards on most opponents faced this season and will present a challenge for North Hall's defense. Despite averaging just 18.1 points per game on offense, the Lions have put up 73 in their last two outings -- both lopsided victories. They are paced by veteran quarterback Kevin Harris and running back Andrew Heaton. A young offensive line appears to be gelling and paving the way for the option, which will require disciplined defense to stop. ... Franklin County's defense is giving up 20.1 points per game, though the unit has only allowed 13 points in its last two wins and is allowing 12.3 points in its three subregion contests. ... A win tonight would ensure the Trojans will play for the subregion title next week at home against Stephens County, while Franklin County could put itself in the thick of the postseason race in 8-AAA with a victory at The Brickyard.

LUMPKIN COUNTY at STEPHENS COUNTY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: The Reservation, Toccoa
-- LUMPKIN (4-3, 1-2 Region 8A-AAA): Lost 49-0 to North Hall last week.
-- STEPHENS (6-1, 3-0 Region 8A-AAA): Defeated White County 25-14 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Stephens County won 35-24 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Indians lead the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: Lumpkin County is looking to bounce back from two straight losses, while Stephens County is looking to secure a chance for the Region 8A-AAA title tonight in Toccoa. A win for Stephens County would ensure that it is playing for the subregion crown next week at North Hall. ... Stephens County is paced by junior running back Chaz Thornton (1,234 yards and 20 touchdowns in seven games), quarterback Dionte Mayfield and receiver Tomas Colbert and is averaging 32.3 points per game. Stephens' defense has also played well throughout, allowing a Region 8-AAA best 9.1 points per game. Despite the strong start, Stephens coach Travis Noland says his team must continue to improve, listing kick coverage, blocking and an improved pass attack as areas of concern. ... There are no seniors among Stephens County's normal starting 11 on either side of the ball. ... Despite last week's loss Lumpkin County battled throughout, the Indians simply failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities and must do a better job of that tonight against Stephens. Lumpkin County is paced by versatile playmaker Ian McIntosh on offense. The senior leads the team with 778 yards rushing, 187 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. The Indians have run the ball well against most opponents, averaging 221 yards rushing and 21 points per game. Quarterback Logan Moye (315 yards, 2 TDs) and Trevor Eudy (195 yards, TD) have also proved steady options for Lumpkin in the backfield. ... Defensively, Lumpkin County is allowing 20.7 points per game. ... Lumpkin County has been outscored 81-6 over its past two losses.

WEST HALL at MONROE AREA

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Legion Field, Monroe
-- WEST HALL (2-5, 2-1 Region 8B-AAA): Lost 35-31 to Oconee County last week.
-- MONROE (5-2, 2-1 Region 8B-AAA): Lost 41-21 to Gainesville last week.
-- LAST MEETING:
-- NOTABLE: West Hall can make a huge statement in Region 8B-AAA with a win tonight, while a Monroe Area victory would essentially seal the No. 1 and 2 spots in the subregion -- that outcome, combined with a Gainesville victory, would give the Red Elephants the 8B-AAA title and put Monroe second in the subregion. West Hall, meanwhile, could climb into second place in 8B-AAA with a victory tonight and make next week's game with Gainesville be for the subregion championship. To do that, the Spartans must contain a lightning-quick Monroe Area option offense and avoid some of the turnovers that hurt West Hall in last week's loss. ... The Spartans multiple offense is led by sophomore quarterback Chandler Newton and running backs A.J. Stephens and Rico Jones. West Hall enters the contest averaging 21.9 points per game, including 34.6 over its subregion contests. The unit has received improved offensive line play and Newton continues to grow in his role. ... West Hall's defense -- which is allowing 31.9 points per game -- faces a tough task against Monroe Area's talented backfield. The Purple Hurricanes are led by quarterback Floyd McCoy and running back Monterian Smith, who are both capable of ripping off long gains, for an offense scoring 31 points per game. The Purple Hurricanes' defense has been inconsistent this season, allowing 24.1 points per contest.

WHITE COUNTY at CHESTATEE

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: War Eagle Stadium, Gainesville
-- WHITE (1-5, 0-3 Region 8A-AAA): Lost 25-14 to Stephens County last week.
-- CHESTATEE (3-4, 0-3 Region 8A-AAA): Lost 41-7 to Franklin County last week.
-- LAST MEETING: White County won 56-14 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Warriors lead the series 7-2.
-- NOTABLE: Both teams are looking to regain their footing after some tough weeks. ... Chestatee has lost four straight, with the biggest change coming on offense. The War Eagles averaged 37.25 points in opening 3-1, but Chestatee has scored just 14 total points since subregion play began. Much of that is due to injuries, with starting quarterback Jordan Degraff going down at the start of the Region 8A-AAA campaign. Degraff returned last week, and the War Eagles rolled up 316 yards but scored just once on five trips inside the Franklin County 20-yard line. Running backs Brandon Thompson (480 yards, 5 TDs) and Quan Clark (360 yards, 3 TDs) continue to carry much of the load for Chestatee. ... The War Eagles defense is allowing 29.6 points per contest and faces a White County option attack that has put up yards against most opponents faced despite scoring just 16.4 points per game. The Warriors are led by quarterback Will Brock and a host of running backs, including Ryan Kennedy, Michael Limbaugh and Dalton Whitfield -- though penalties and turnovers have proved costly for a young team still learning under a new coaching staff. ... The Warriors defense is allowing 26.6 points per game.

JOHNSON at OCONEE COUNTY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Warrior Stadium, Watkinsville
-- JOHNSON (0-7, 0-3 Region 8A-AAA): Lost 29-14 to Walnut Grove last week.
-- OCONEE (3-4, 1-2 Region 8A-AAA): Defeated West Hall 35-31 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Johnson won 40-27 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Knights lead the series 3-0.
-- NOTABLE: Johnson is looking to notch its first victory of the campaign and heads on the road to face a very capable Oconee County squad. ... The Knights have put up yards against most opponents faced this season, relying on a bruising, physical run game led by Cedric Harris. A.J. Millwood has also played well this season but has been hampered by an injury picked up Oct. 7. The Knights' biggest issue has been converting drives into touchdowns, averaging just 14 points per game. ... Defensively, Johnson is allowing 35.4 points per contest. ... Oconee's defense has also struggled at times this campaign and enters giving up 31.9 points per game. On offense, the Warriors are paced by running back Davis Aiken, quarterback Connor White and receiver Jamar Thomas. Utilizing a spread attack, Oconee averages 21.1 points per game and is coming off its biggest scoring output of the season in last week's narrow win over West Hall (a tie with a 35-0 victory over East Jackson in the season opener).

REGION 8-AA
EAST HALL at DAWSON COUNTY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Tiger Stadium, Dawsonville
-- EAST HALL (4-3, 2-1 Region 8N-AA): Lost 35-19 to Fannin County last week.
-- DAWSON (3-4, 2-1 Region 8N-AA): Defeated Union County 22-19 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Dawson County won 24-6 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Tigers lead the series 4-1.
-- NOTABLE: East Hall is looking to bounce back from its first subregion loss of the campaign last week, while Dawson County is looking for its second straight 8N-AA victory tonight in Dawsonville. The Vikings and Tigers are currently tied for second place in subregion play and the winner of this game will stay in the race for first with one game left in 8N-AA play. East Hall still controls its own destiny, as a victory tonight would give the Vikings a chance to knock off Banks County next week with the No. 1 seed on the line. Dawson County has already lost to 8N-AA leader Banks County this season and would need to win out with the Leopards losing once more in order for the Tigers to finish first. ... Both teams have struggled to be consistent for an entire game so far this season, and both the Vikings and Tigers have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. ... East Hall's offense will rely on the run, featuring a number of capable backs. Jamond Witt, Austen Mahaffey and quarterback Cameron Davis have all put up big numbers rushing this campaign -- though the Vikings enter Friday's contest banged up and could miss some starters on both sides of the ball. East Hall is scoring 25.4 points per game and allowing 22.4. ... Dawson County's multiple offense has also rolled up plenty of yards this season, though scoring hasn't always come easy for a group averaging 26.1 points per game. The Tigers feature quarterback Tyler Dominy and a talented corps of receivers, including the rangy Bruce Clark. Dawson County can also run the ball effectively through fullback Zack Martin. ... Defensively, Dawson County has shown improvement over its last two games, allowing 19 points in each after allowing an average of 32 points through its first five games.

BANKS COUNTY at FANNIN COUNTY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Rebel Stadium. Blue Ridge
-- BANKS (6-1, 3-0 Region 8N-AA): Defeated Rabun County 40-28 last week.
-- FANNIN (4-3, 1-2 Region 8N-AA): Defeated East Hall 35-19 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Fannin County won 13-12 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Rebels lead the series 4-1.
-- NOTABLE: Banks County can solidify its spot atop Region 8-AA, North with a win in Blue Ridge, but Fannin County isn't out of the running yet and could set up a photo finish between a number of teams for the subregion's top seed if it can continue its rebound tonight. The Rebels bounced back from back-to-back subregion losses in impressive fashion last week, dominating early at East Hall, and Banks County knows it is in for a challenge on the road. ... The Leopards have risen to the top of 8N-AA thanks to a strong running game and an ability to stop the run -- both factors will be put to the test tonight against a Rebels team with similar strengths. Banks County is led by physical running back Dean Ewing, quarterback Tyler Hubbard and big-play receiver/running back Marquaze Maddox. The Leopards had a breakout scoring performance last week (40 points) and are averaging just 19.6 points per game. Yet Banks has the stingiest defense in 8N-AA, allowing just 14 points per game -- 18.6 through three subregion games. ... Fannin County's option offense comes in averaging 28.3 points per game. The Rebels are led by running backs Peyton Satterfield (144 yards, 2 TDs last week) and Blake Henry (115 yards, 2 TDs last week), while quarterback Trevor Stone is also a threat to run. ... Defensively, the Rebels are allowing 27.7 points per game.

UNION COUNTY at RABUN COUNTY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Frank Snyder Stadium, Tiger
-- UNION (1-6, 0-3 Region 8N-AA): Lost 22-19 to Dawson County last week.
-- RABUN (3-4, 1-2 Region 8N-AA): Lost 40-28 to Banks County last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Union County won 38-14 on Oct. 22, 2010. Rabun County leads series 31-15.
-- NOTABLE: Rabun County is looking to stay in the mix for the playoff race in Region 8N-AA, while Union County is looking to nab its first subregion win of the campaign. ... Rabun County's offense features running back Dyllan Crabtree and quarterback Wes Holcombe and has put up 25.6 points per game through three subregion contests. Defensively, the Wildcats are allowing 30.6 points per game. ... Union County has played two of its three subregion foes to the wire this season, falling to Banks County and Dawson County by a combined five points, so the Panthers will feel their time is coming. Union's offense is led by junior quarterback T Bentley. The Panthers have struggled to score this season, averaging 13 points per game. Yet the Union County defense has played well enough to keep the team in its subregion games, allowing 23.6 points over three contests.

JEFFERSON at JACKSON COUNTY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Panther Stadium, Jefferson
-- JEFFERSON (5-2, 2-2 Region 8S-AA): Lost 14-0 to Elbert County last week.
-- JACKSON (2-5, 1-3 Region 8S-AA): Lost 56-0 to North Oconee on Oct. 7.
-- LAST MEETING: Jefferson won 42-21 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Dragons lead the series 3-0.
-- NOTABLE: Jefferson is looking to maintain a stranglehold on the third place spot in Region 8S-AA, while Jackson County is looking to generate some positive momentum against a cross-town rival. ... Jefferson will be eager to get back on track after getting shut out by Elbert County last week. The Dragons normally-explosive offense managed just 129 yards and standout junior quarterback Bryant Shirreffs threw his first interception of the season. On the season, Shirreffs has 1,300 yards and 16 TDs passing, along with 220 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Tristen Jackson leads the Jefferson rushing attack with 518 yards and 4 TDs, and the Dragons are averaging 36.3 points per contest. Defensively, the Dragons have improved over each of the past two weeks, allowing 13 and 14 points, respectively. For the season Jefferson is giving up 21.4 points per game. ... Jackson County's offense has struggled to put up points in bunches this season, averaging just 11.7 per game and getting shut out three times. The Panthers attack is led by quarterback Kyle Daniel and receivers Xavier Harper and Ben Brissey. ... Defensively, Jackson County is allowing 30.7 points per contest. ... Should Jefferson win, it would essentially seal a playoff shot for the Dragons in the No. 3 spot in Region 8S-AA -- thanks to Region 8-AA's crossover play-in games on Nov. 4. A loss would mean Jefferson would be battling with Jackson County, Hart County and East Jackson for third place.

ELBERT COUNTY at EAST JACKSON

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Eagle Stadium, Commerce
-- ELBERT (7-0, 4-0 Region 8S-AA): Defeated Jefferson 14-0 last week. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 6 in Class AA.
-- EAST JACKSON (3-4, 1-3 Region 8S-AA): Lost 57-3 to North Oconee last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Elbert County won 20-0 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Blue Devils lead the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: Elbert County is one game removed from a subregion title showdown with North Oconee but will not want to look past East Jackson tonight in Commerce. ... The Eagles have struggled to put up points since beginning subregion play, scoring just 8.5 points in four contests -- including three straight losses. East Jackson's option attack has gotten strong play from quarterback Tyler Collins and running back CJ Allen. Defensively, East Jackson is allowing 28.3 points per game -- 32.25 through four subregion games. ... Elbert County features a grinding, physical offense and a shut down defense -- as it showed last week in halting Jefferson's high-flying offense, allowing just 129 yards and only six completions on 25 pass attempts. The Blue Devils are led by running back Tyshon Dye and are averaging 33.3 points per game on offense, while giving up a paltry 6.4 points per game on defense, including four shutouts.

REGION 8-A
COMMERCE at PRINCE AVENUE CHRISTIAN
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Bogart
-- COMMERCE (3-4, 2-1 Region 8-A): Lost 21-10 to Athens Academy last week.
-- PRINCE AVENUE (7-0, 3-0 Region 8-A): Defeated Social Circle 48-0 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Commerce won 35-20 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Tigers lead the series 5-0.
-- NOTABLE: Commerce is looking to bounce back from a hard-fought loss last week but is facing the top team in Region 8-A tonight on the road. ... The Tigers offense has improved since beginning region play, averaging 31 points per game -- against 16.7 for the entire season. Commerce's option attack is led by senior quarterback Cody Streetman. Running back Quay Little has also begun to elevate his play since returning from an early season concussion. ... Defensively, the Tigers are allowing 19.3 points per game, including two shutouts in region play. ... Prince Avenue has been led by an incredibly stingy defense. The Wolverines are allowing a miniscule 2.4 points per game, with only George Walton managing more than a touchdown (in a 21-10 Prince Avenue win). The Wolverines have also put up five shutouts this campaign. Offensively, Prince Avenue is led by quarterback Carl Mattox and by running back Rob Farriba and is averaging 31.1 points per game, though the Wolverines are more grinding than explosive, happy to churn out four-five yard gains on the ground. ... Thanks to wins over Athens Christian and Riverside Military this season, Commerce is already looking good to grab one of Region 8-A's playoff spots -- even with games against Prince Avenue and George Walton Academy looming. The Tigers close with a region game against winless Social Circle.

GEORGIA MILITARY at LAKEVIEW ACADEMY

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Jock Horner Field, Gainesville
-- GEORGIA MILITARY (5-2, playing a non-region schedule): Defeated Glascock County 28-13 last week.
-- LAKEVIEW (2-4, playing a non-region schedule): Defeated North Cobb Christian 49-21 last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Lakeview won 31-0 on Oct. 22, 2010. The Lions lead the series 1-0.
-- NOTABLE: Lakeview is looking for its third win of the campaign and second in a row after a rousing victory last week; though it won't be easy against a Georgia Military team allowing just 10.4 points per game. ... The Lions run-heavy option offense dominated last week, rolling up 451 yards on the ground. Lakeview is paced by quarterback Ted Reynolds -- who moved into the position during the season; previous starter Matt Askounis has moved to slotback and has excelled (last week he had 144 yards rushing and 2 TDs). The Lions are averaging 15 points per game, while its defense is allowing 20 points per contest. ... Georgia Military has been up and down on offense this season, averaging 30.6 points per game through five wins but also getting shut out twice.

TOWNS COUNTY at GLASCOCK COUNTY
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Panther Stadium, Gibson
-- TOWNS (1-6, playing a non-region schedule): Lost 42-6 to River Ridge last week.
-- GLASCOCK (2-5, playing a non-region schedule): Lost 28-13 to Georgia Military last week.
-- LAST MEETING: Towns County won 47-45 on Oct. 22, 2010. Glascock leads the series 2-1.
