Flood Watch remains; heavy rains continue

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - A Flood Warning has been issued for Forsyth County and the Winter Weather Advisory has been cancelled for all but Rabun County. Elsewhere, a Flood Watch continues as heavy rains fell across north Georgia overnight and continued into the early morning hours.

Sleet fell as far south as Gainesville as early as noon Thursday and by 5:00 about an inch of snow was on the ground in northern White County and was being blamed for several wrecks and several roads in that area were closed: highways 17, 75, and 366. Heavier accumulations were reported further north. As a result of the snow and sleet, a number of cancellations and closings had been announced by nightfall. (See separate posting.)

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for part of north and central Georgia and was expanded late Thursday afternoon to include Habersham and Stephens counties... and a Wind Advisory remains in effect.

The Flood Warning for Forsyth County is for the Big Creek area in the southern part of the county.

By 7:00 Friday morning, rainfall at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport for Thursday and early Friday totaled 1.86 inches. The top wind gust at the airport: 34 mph.
