BOE votes to allow excused absences for inauguration

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Board of Education has voted to allow excused absences for any city school student attending next month's inauguration of the governor and lieutenant governor.

Board member Sammy Smith proposed the idea in light of the historic significance of the event: both men who will be sworn in are from Gainesville and it is the first time in the state's history that the state's top public officials will be from the same town.

Parents will be required to declare, in writing, that their child attended the January 10 ceremonies in order for the absence to be excused. The vote was 4-1 in favor of the motion with Delores Diaz the lone dissenter.

NEW HOLLAND STRATEGIES

School officials are gearing up to improve things at New Holland Core Knowledge Academy...the only school in the Gainesville School System that did not make adequate yearly progress (or AYP) last year.

Dr. Merrianne Dyer said Tuesday morning that the school has already moved in that direction, implementing a number of things targeting that goal.

Among them: the re-assignment of some English teachers so that students are better served, a new method of tracking the progress of students at New Holland, and use of a regional eduction agency to meet those goals.
