Football returns to Mercer U. after 70 years

By The Associated Press
MACON -- Mercer University plans to kick-start its football program in 2013 for the first time in 70 years.

School officials announced the plans Friday at a news conference. Board chairman Homer Drake says that the decision came after more than two years of study and discussion.

President Bill Underwood says the university is seeking membership in the Pioneer Football League, a football-only conference.

Underwood said reviving the school's football program will enhance Mercer's academic reputation and help the school attract "the most sought-after students."

The school has not competed in football since 1941, but has a football tradition stretching back to 1892.
