Son of former EU lawmaker drowns in Dawson Co.

By The Associated Press
DAWSONVILLE - A former member of the European Parliament has flown to the United States after her son drowned while attending college in Dawson County.

The Dawson County Emergency Service said Tuesday that 22-year-old Kevin Sinnott of Ireland drowned in a lake at the Gold Creek Golf Course which is next to the campus of Southern Catholic College, where he was a student. His body was recovered about 2:00 Tuesday afternoon by members of the Hall County Sheriff's Office Dive Team.

Sinnott was one of nine children of Kathy Sinnott, a Chicago native and Irish citizen who campaigns for family values and rights for the disabled. She represented southwest Ireland in the European Parliament for five years, but was defeated in this year's election.

Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs says officials from its New York consulate are helping Kathy Sinnott while she is in Georgia.
