(Cleveland)- The White County Board of Education is preparing to inform citizens about the upcoming vote on the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax referendum for education later this year.

Thursday the board heard a report from Superintendent Dr. Paul Shaw about plans for developing a SPLOST citizens committee and information presentation at group meeting such as the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

Also during the meeting Debra Seabolt Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction gave the board an update on the work by the school system to seek Charter status from the state. According to Dr. Shaw they will be holding some public meeting on this in September. The application to the state is due in November. According to Shaw, with the status of charter school the system would have more flexibility in their programs and parents would have more input into the operation of the school.

The board also heard an update from Regina Coleman on the White County School Community Study recommendations, that was developed by a citizens and school staff group in 2005.
