GAINESVILLE - You will get a chance starting next Thursday to tell Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) what you think about a plan to allow some motorists to pay to use the HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes on I-85 in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties.
The idea is to turn the lanes into HOT (High Occupancy Toll) lanes and charge motorists to use them in cases when the driver is the only person on board. Those motorists would "buy" a certain number of trips in the HOV lanes, have a device installed on their car and each time they used one of the lanes, that device would deduct another trip from their quota.
Teri Pope, spokeswoman for the GDOT office in Gainesville, said Wednesday the lanes would still be free for multi-passenger vehicles but a car or truck with only the driver on board could legally use the HOV lanes for a fee. Several meetings are scheduled over the next two months to get public input, starting Thursday, March 26, in Duluth.
