Tracking dogs lead authorities to escaped prisoner

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The search for an escapee from the Hall County Correctional Institute is over.

The prisoner has been recaptured. Word of the recapture came shortly after 10:00 this morning, about two hours after the escape.

Warden Avery Niles says Datrin Fitzgerald Jackson, 19, Murrayville, a convicted armed robber, was captured about 10:00 a.m. in woods near the prison.

Niles says Jackson slipped over a fence as inmates were being led from the prison for the day's work details. He says tracking dogs from the prison flushed Jackson from hiding not far from the prison. Canine units from Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto and Phillips State Prison in Buford were also called in. A state patrol helicopter and Hall County sheriff's deputies assisted as well.

The search was centered in the Calvary Church Road/Candler Highway area. The correctional institute is located in that area as is the Hall County Detention Center.
