Hiring freeze at Jackson EMC

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
JEFFERSON - Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) has imposed restrictions on employee travel and a hiring freeze as it tries to cope with the struggling economy which is greatly impacting the calls for new electrical service.

In addition to the hiring freeze, spokeswoman Bonnie Jones says that no new positions are being added and vacant positions are not being filled unless they are crucial to the operation of the electric co-op.

Jones says the number of new Jackson EMC customers is well-below normal because of the slowdown in construction and population growth in northeast Georgia. She says they typically add "8,000 to 10,000" new customers each year but that number is almost "flat" right now.

As for the travel restrictions, Jones says employees will not attend conferences, meetings and training sessions as they have in the past.
