ELLIJAY - Chestatee won its third straight game and set up a huge matchup next week with rival White County after knocking Gilmer 33-21 Friday in a battle of unbeaten teams in Region 7A-AAA play.
The War Eagles (4-2, 3-0 in subregion) trailed 7-0 early but scored the next 19 points to take control of the game. They led eventually led 19-14 at halftime before the game was suspended for nearly two hours because of lightning.
Chestatee would outscore the Bobcats (4-2, 2-1) 14-7 in the second half and coach Stan Luttrell said it was huge game for both teams.
"We both wanted this game because you can't have more than one or two losses to have a chance (at the playoffs)," he said. "Both teams played hard but I thought our defense in the second half was excellent."
The win for Chestatee sets up an almost must-win showdown against White County next week.
"It's always a big game when we play White County but this one is huge because this was the game that kept us out last year," he said. "We need to win next week."
