Flood warnings remain in effect in north Georgia

ATLANTA - The National Weather Service says flood warnings remain in effect in north Georgia, mainly from runoff following two days of rain that dumped from 3 to 7 inches across the area.

Meteorologist Laura Griffith at the Weather Service in Peachtree City says another system will move into north Georgia over the weekend, but said it will be nothing like the rainfall in the 48-hour period Tuesday and Wednesday.

Griffith says the highest rain total was 7 inches at Hammond, west of Rome near the Alabama-Georgia line. Rainfall at the Gainesville airport the two days week totaled just over five inches.(See separate story.)

The Weather Service says minor to moderate flooding will continue to occur on some rivers and streams into Friday.

The Coosa River six miles southwest of Rome was just below the moderate flood stage of 28 feet with a 27.6-foot reading early Thursday morning.
