Report recommends moving 2-year colleges to tech college system

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - A group is recommending the state's two-year colleges be moved from the University System of Georgia to the technical college system.

The report released in December says merging the eight community colleges with the 33 campuses in the Technical College System of Georgia would help the university system focus on bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as research. The panel was headed by former University of Georgia President Charles Knapp and Dean Alford, a member of the technical college system board.

Gov. Sonny Perdue's spokesman, Bert Brantley, did not immediately return a call for comment from The Associated Press.

The technical college system is hoping to merge 14 of its campuses into seven colleges as a way to save on administrative costs.
