GSP: 20 die in holiday crashes; wet roads to blame

ATLANTA - Georgia State Patrol officials say wet roads were to blame for the 20 traffic deaths reported during the New Year's holiday period.

GSP and the Georgia Department of Transportation estimate there were 3,008 traffic crashes during the 102-hour period that began at 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and ended at midnight Monday. Seventeen of those crashes involved fatalities. There were 1,350 injuries reported.

The fatalities include a Barrow County man. 32-year-old Russell Hays of Auburn was killed New Year's night when his car left a Lilburn road, overturned and burned, according to Gwinnett County Police.

State troopers in Gainesville report investigating 22 accident with 13 injuries. Across northeast Georgia, there were 260 reported accidents with 83 injuries.

There were 3,108 crashes during last year's holiday period, with 1,250 injuries and 22 deaths reported. Those were also blamed on wet roads.
