GAINESVILLE - The Martin Elementary Odyssey of the Mind (OTM) team placed 9th out of 55 elementary teams in World Finals Competition at the recent 2008 Odyssey of the Mind World Championships.
The Martin Tee Structure team members are 4th graders Dylan Barron and Blake Carter; 5th graders Jennifer Keller, Derick Leach, Ellie Parker, Harper Seymour, and Maddison Sharp. The team is coached by Martin teachers Kim Carroll and Danica Pruitt and college student Tommy Carroll.
In addition, Davis Middle School had two teams at the world competitions: the Tee Structure team, which finished 19th, and the DinoStories team, which finished 32nd.
Tee Structure members are 6th graders Joey Miller and Bailey Smith; 7th graders Nick Cantrell, Jarad Dunn, Zac Kellogg, Savannah Phillips, and Steven Porter. DinoStories team members are 6th grader Tyler Seibert ; 8th graders Madison Brush, Ansley Leach, Jordan Luster, Danny Oliver, and Linsey Thaxton. Molly McCafferty and Joel Cantrell are the Davis teams' faculty sponsors.
This year's event at the University of Maryland drew 843 teams comprised of 22,000 students, the largest competition to date. There were 130 international teams represented. Students from China, Kazakhstan, Canada, Poland, Hong Kong, Mexico, South Korea, Singapore, Germany, and Pakistan, as well as 47 states participated.
While in the area, the participants got to visit some of the sites in Washington, D.C., including the White House, the Smithsonian, and the Washington Monument.
Martin Elementary was making its fourth consecutive trip to the OTM World Competition; for Davis Middle, it was their second.
Odyssey of the Mind promotes creativity and team spirit while inspiring and educating the inquisitive minds of our children. The problems are centered on creative problem solving in many different areas. Problems range from classical to technical and everything in between.
