All but one Hall school making AYP in "All Students" category this year

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - All but one Hall County school will make AYP, or Adequate Yearly Progress, this year in the "All Students" category.

At the middle school level, only South Hall Middle School will not make the list, according to schools superintendent Will Schofield. He said while it made AYP in the "All Students" category, it's falling short in two subgroups.

A full report on statewide AYP data is not due until later this summer. That's when we'll be hearing from most school systems.

"While we continue to believe there are much more constructive ways to measure the effectiveness of Georgia's schools, our team members and students have worked very hard this year and are to be congratulated for extremely positive results," Schofield said Friday.

"As we continue to verify student data, we now feel confident projecting that five of six Hall County Middle Schools will make AYP this year," Schofield said. "Of special significance is Chestatee Middle School as they will come off the state's 'Needs Improvement' list."

Schofield had already said East Hall Middle School has made AYP for the first time in nine years. Last year, three of six county middle schools made AYP.

South Hall Middle School made AYP in the All Students category this year, but, Schofield said, they currently are not making AYP in two subgroups: Special Education students in English/Language Arts and English Language Learners in English Language/Arts.

"Many of these students are in summer school and there is an outside probability that the handful of students needed to pass in each area may be realized."

All seven high schools are projected to make AYP.

At the elementary level, "we are optimistic, but will not release projections until summer school retests are computed at the end of June."

Schofield said he expects three schools will be shedding "Needs Improvement" labels: Chestatee Middle, Lyman Hall Elementary and Myers Elementary. "We do not foresee any new schools becoming 'Needs Improvement this year."
