BLAIRSVILLE - It's been five years since the Anderson Creek trail for off-road vehicles near Ellijay has been closed, and the U.S. Forest Service is now making it permanent.
The trail, one of 11 in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests designed for such vehicles, was closed in 2003 because of environmental damage caused by illegal riding.
The forest service then began a re-evaluation of the use of the trail, according to a posting on its Web site, reaching a decision to:
1) Close all trails within, and connected with, the Anderson Creek OHV Trail
System, including approximately six miles of authorized trails and several miles
of unsigned and undesignated trails.
2) Prevent illegal access from adjacent private ownerships and enforce closures
through placement of physical barriers such as gates, fallen trees or any
combination thereof.
3) Decommission the trail system and ensure rehabilitation through any combination of techniques including natural re-growth, earth reshaping, earthen blockades, fallen trees or any combination thereof. Erosion control measures, such as the installment of hay bales and/or silt fences, may be used to prevent soil movement.
