ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks Under-23 team will play host to the famed Liverpool Football Club Academy team in a friendly at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta.
Tickets for Wednesday's exhibition between the Silverbacks and Liverpool Academy are available at the gate and cost $15 for adults and $5 for children. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
The Liverpool Academy side is made up of 15, 16, and 17-year-old players, hand-picked with the intent of developing into future professional players for the club. Current Liverpool first-team members to come through the team's Academy include international stars Steven Gerard, Jamie Carragher, and Craig Lindfield. Other notable products of Liverpool's Academy system include Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen.
Founded in 1892, Liverpool Football Club holds the distinction of winning a record 18 League titles, five European Cups and seven F.A. Cups.
The Silverbacks Under-23 squad plays in the United Soccer League's Premier Development League (PDL). The side is comprised of college and other top amateur players determined by the Silverbacks coaching staff through scouting and various trials to have professional potential. The Silverbacks Under-23s play a regional 16 fixture season that runs from May through July.
Currently three members of the Silverbacks first team, Mac Kandji, Tate Parrish, and Chris Mahaffey, came up through the Under-23 side. Other past Silverbacks Under-23 players have gone on to play for other USL-1, USL-2, and Major League Soccer clubs.
The Silverbacks Under-23s begin season play Friday, May 9, hosting the Cary RailHawks Under-23s at Silverbacks Park.
