Lawyer for man charged in wreck that killed 4 says his client was not at fault

By The Associated Press
NORCROSS - The lawyer for a 20-year-old Gainesville man charged in a four-car interstate crash that killed two children and two adults and injured four others says his client is not to blame for the accident.

Cody Rhoden turned himself in to authorities just before midnight Tuesday. The accident happened Monday night on Interstate 85 near Norcross.

Gwinnett County Police spokesman David Schiralli said Rhoden faces charges including four counts of vehicular homicide, one count of reckless driving, one count of felony hit and run and three counts of misdemeanor hit and run.

Police say Rhoden was traveling at high speeds and weaving through traffic, which caused a sport utility vehicle carrying six members of a family to swerve, strike the center median and overturn. The wreck caused a chain reaction that ensnared three other vehicles.

Rhoden's attorney, Jeffrey Sliz, said his client is not to blame for the accident. Slitz told Atlanta television station WXIA that his client's car was hit in the side, causing it to spin out of control.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the family had rented the SUV limousine to take them home from the airport after returning from a friend's wedding in Utah.

Police identified the victims as Whitney Randle; her 13-month-old son, Kayden Randle-Finley; and her brother, 14-year-old Alexander Randle. All were passengers in the SUV. The driver, 44-year-old Mark Anthony Gay, who owned the limousine company, also was killed.

Injured were Randle's mother and father, her fiance and an 11-year-old boy who was a passenger in another car.
