State could owe retired teachers $500 million under court order

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - A judge is granting about 15,000 retired Georgia educators back pay as part of a class-action lawsuit against the state's teachers retirement system.

The tab for the court order released Friday could run as high as 500 million dollars. Senior Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alice Bonner said the money will come out of the retirement system's reserves and will not affect benefits for future retirees.

The lawsuit, filed in 2004, claimed the state used incorrect data to determine the life expectancy of teachers, which meant retirees got less money than they were due. The Georgia Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that the retirement system was liable for the payments.

Bonner's court order awards the named plaintiffs in the case -- Larrie Grant Plymel and Corinne Monroe -- $75,000 each.

The state is expected to appeal the order.
