Run For the Border

When Taco Bell began a marketing campaign several years ago, I am willing to bet that they had no idea how their marketing slogan would eventually become a national parody. "Run for the Border" was a great success for the fast food company as they hit the airwaves in hopes of bringing more customers to love their tacos, burritos, and other food selections. Needless to say, it worked.

But, now the "Run for the Border" motto has little do to with food and everything to do with our nations on going problem concerning illegal immigration. The direction of the proverbial run depends on which side of the border one might find themselves. Even on the northern side of the border it is easy to find opposing views of who should be running and in which direction they should be running. Without going into all of the same old arguments that we have already heard, both for and against enforcement, the fact remains that the problem is still with us. We hear about it on a daily basis, but it seems that talking about it is much easier than doing anything productive to resolve the issue.

What have we done? Well, we have begun construction on a real and virtual border fence that is expected to be completed sometime soon, at least according to Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff. Who knows what soon means? It seems that some landowners near the border were all excited about stopping the flow of illegal immigrants from Mexico until they discovered that the fence might run on a portion of their property. The idea lost a bit of its luster because they found out the fence may block their view of the river. That is understandable. Stopping one of the greatest security threats in our country is one thing, but not being able to see the river while enjoying a nice cappuccino is another. Let's get our priorities in order here.

We then decided that we would go to the source. One resolution after another has been passed that would hold employers responsible for hiring workers who were in the country illegally. That should do it
