Gainesville getting $600k to develop charter schools

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - The state Board of Education has awarded $600,000 in federal grant funds to the Gainesville City School System for the development of a charter school system.

School system officials said Tuesday the money can be used for costs associated with initial implementation of approved charter schools.

This may include activities such as refining the desired educational results and methods for measuring progress toward achieving those results, professional development of teachers, informing the community about the schools, acquiring necessary equipment, reporting progress and other initial operating costs.

They said the funds will be distributed equally among the seven schools within the school system.

The state approved Gainesville's application in June.

"We want to celebrate some independence and some options for really imaginative programs to help our students," Gainesville school board member Sammy Smith said at the time.

Smith said attaining charter system status gives Gainesville some independence in the way it runs its schools.

"Regulations passed for a Gwinnett system or a Chatham County system may not fit the smallest of school systems across the state," he said.
