HOMER - The owner of a Gainesville company that produces and ships eggs is looking for a new location after dropping plans to build an egg farm in Banks County.
Country Charms Eggs pursued rezoning to allow an egg farm in Banks County after being turned down by Madison County. Company officials announced last week that they were backing away from the project because of public opposition.
The chairman of the Banks County Board of Commissioners, Gene Hart, says the owner told officials he had not expected so much opposition to the farm.
In March, the Madison County Board of Commissioners voted to deny a rezone request that would have paved the way for a farm.
The company's owner, Brent Booker, told Madison County officials he planned to erect double-decker chicken houses for about 1.5 million hens on a 178-acre tract on Jot Em Down road off Georgia 106, north of Ila.
He said the hens would produce nearly 1.5 million eggs a day, but would not detract from the area, which contains numerous chicken houses, and would provide jobs for local residents.
About 100 people attended a March 26 Madison County Commission meeting to oppose the farm; commissioners unanimously voted to deny the rezoning.
