A high school student is facing charges after falsely claiming he had been stabbed on campus by another person.

The Luella High School campus was put on lockdown Tuesday after the 16-year-old student came to class with stab wounds to his chest.

But the teen, who was airlifted to a hospital, later admitted to investigators that the two superficial stab wounds were self-inflicted, authorities said.

The student's claim was prompted by a confrontation with other students, Henry County Sheriff's Maj. Keith McBrayer said.

"He'd had a conflict where some threats had been made, and he assumed that this would keep him out of school for a while," McBrayer said.

The student faces charges of giving a false report to law enforcement and weapons violations, McBrayer said.

According to the school system's student handbook, the student, whose name has not been released, could face discipline for weapons possession. Assistant Superintendent Ethan Hildreth would not comment on possible disciplinary measures by the school system.
