Another 100-degree scorcher

By by Ken Stanford
UNDATED - Record highs toppled all over northeast Georgia as the heat wave continued, with 100 degrees in Gainesville tying the old record.

The reading in Gainesville matches the record set for the date in 1953, and it was the second straight day that the thermometer topped out at 100 - and the fourth of the summer, all occuring in the last week.

A random check of five other places in northeast Georgia found records shattered in all them.

It was 102 in Dawsonville and Ellijay, 99 in Homer and Winder, and 95 in Clayton.

Elsewhere in the state, the National Weather Service said Atlanta tied a record Thursday for the most 100-degree days in a given month. The reading of 101 is the seventh day in August to reach that mark, matching the record of July 1993.

Athens reached a high of 105, while it was 104 in Cartersville and 103 in Augusta, and Rome, and 102 in Macon, according to the weather service.

State climatologist David Stooksbury says temperatures could remain in the mid 90s to low 100s into the weekend.
