DNA identifies missing Atlanta kayaker's body in S.C.

By The Associated Press

The remains of a missing kayaker from Atlanta have been identified through DNA analysis after washing ashore last week at Hunting Island State Park, officials said.

Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said the remains were those of Stephen Lee, 27, who went fishing two weeks ago with his brother-in-law Jeremy Scott, 28, also of Atlanta.

The two set off in a tandem kayak from Seabrook Island, about 20 miles south of Charleston. Relatives said they intended to stay close to shore but were swept out to sea when a storm rolled in.

Scott clung to the kayak for 18 hours until a Coast Guard helicopter rescue team plucked him from the ocean off Fripp Island on May 9. Hunting Island is north of Fripp.

The Coast Guard searched more than 800 square miles for the men as the low pressure system that became Subtropical Storm Andrea churned up 30 mph winds and waves of 4 to 6 feet.

Forensic pathologists at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston compared the remains found on Hunting Island with DNA samples of Lee, said Capt. Bob Bromage, of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Pathologists will continue tests to determine Lee's cause of death, he said.
