GAINESVILLE - Myers Elementary School in Hall County held its 25th annual Patriotic Day celebration Friday.
The theme for the day was "Where We've Been, Where We're Going" and included speakers, activities, a parade and the East Hall ROTC Color Guard. Awards were given to top student citizens in each classroom.
The day was developed by the school's namesake, the late Dean Myers, who served as the school's principal as well as the system's superintendent for two terms.
"He started this to instill in the children patriotism and love for country. It started around Memorial Day. He wanted the children to understand how we had people who would give their lives for our freedom," explained teacher Marilyn Parks.
The school had special activities throughout the day focusing on patriotism and citizenship. Students learned about the schools history, engaged in traditional crafts and visited with a Hall County K-9 unit and an Army sergeant.
"Over the years, we have done all kinds of things to instill patriotism. We've done colonial activities. We've done space. We've done lots of different things," explained Parks. "It's like a field day on campus."
Myer's widow, Illa Myers attended the celebration along with eight teachers who were on the faculty for the first Patriotic Day 25 years ago.
