'Tax day' protest planned

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Fair Tax plans a protest outside the Green Street Post Office next month on tax day.

Stephanie Usrey, Hall County Fair Tax Coordinator, says it'll take place on Monday, Apr. 17, the deadline this year for filing income tax returns.

The local group recently hosted a forum in Gainesville at which Fair Tax advocate and Georgia Congressman John Linder spoke.

Fair Tax proponents support replacing the federal income tax system with a progressive national retail sales tax.

Linder, sponsor of HR 25 (The FairTax Act of 2007), told the group the legislation how has 56 co-sponsors.

By the way, "Tax day" on Apr. 17 this year because the traditional filing date, Apr. 15, is on Sunday. When that happens, the IRS typically pushes the deadline to the next business day. But April 16 is a holiday, Emancipation Day, in Washington, D.C., so the agency has pushed the deadline back to April 17. The new deadline applies to the entire country.
