WASHINGTON - Hall County's population now tops 173,000 and five counties in the area are among the nation's fastest-growing.

Census Bureau estimates released Thurday morning show Hall County gained about 7,000 people between 2005 and 2006.

The increase since the 2000 census has been close to 35,000.

Forsyth remains the fastest-growing county in the state and fifth-fastest in the country; also on the list of the fastest-growing in the nation are Barrow, Jackson, Dawson and Gwinnett.

Habersham grew by 2,000; White by about 700; and, Lumpkin by 900.

GEORGIA'S POPULATION

According to the estimates, Chattahoochee County in west Georgia had the biggest percentage gain in population in the country from 2005 to 2006.

The rapidly growing county is home to Fort Benning, which is seeing growth as a result of base realignment by the U.S. military. According to the Census Bureau, Chattahoochee grew 13.2 percent -- an increase of 1,635 people to a total of 14,041.

Paulding County in northwest metro Atlanta was ranked eighth in growth rate. The Census Bureau estimates an increase of 8,964 in Paulding County to a total of 121,530 -- an increase of eight percent.

The county's increase helped bring a population milestone to metro Atlanta, which the figures say passed the 5 million mark last year.

The total population estimate for the 28-county metro area showed a population of 5.138 million.
